Maize – Xbox One Review
Maize is something else. I can’t say I have ever played a game like this before. It has everything from talking corn. To evil talking corn. To a Russian talking bear called Vladdy. Vladdy is the most amazing character in any game ever but we will get to him.
Let’s start with the trailer because it gives you a rough idea of what you’re getting yourself into but it also helps promote the game very well. The trailer shows you majority of the characters, shows you parts of the map that you will be visiting as well as some of the cut scenes. We also see and hear Vladdy talk. Seeing Vladdy in this trailer made me want to play the game even more because he is just so comical.
You wake up in a corn field which is also a bit of a maze.. The first thing you want to do is make your way to the barn house. On the way there you might get lost but just before you arrive you see a desk with an English muffin on it and a letter next to it. You can collect both of these items. One of them goes into your storage so you can use it later and one of them goes into your folio. There are 75 folio items to collect throughout the game and you can get a total of 150G for collecting all of them. After making you way to the barn house you then have to find lots of clues and solve many puzzles to get the next section of the map open. The more puzzles you complete and the more clues you find the closer you come to finding the secrets of the farm and theresearch facility.
The research facility is in interesting place. There is life corn that walk around and give you messages. There is queen corn who wants to get out of been trapped there and there is also an evil corn who doesn’t want anything to change. Throughout the facility you will find sticky notes stuck around which are conversations between the 2 scientists, Ted and Bob. It is also in this facility where you meet Valddy…
I mentioned Vladdy earlier as the most amazing character and I wasn’t lying. He is a bear that you make but he ends up having a Russian accent and hating everything about everything (Probably why I relate to him so much). Seriously though he just moans about everything and calls everything stupid and he just keeps calling you ‘Idiot’ because he doesn’t know your name. When you are collecting items to help you he calls them garbage and stupid garbage. Just wait till you see him drive a tractor.
The length of this game is interesting because it taken me around 4 hours gameplay to complete it. However there is a 200G achievement for completing the game in under 2 hours in 1 sitting. Good luck doing that in your first sitting without some sort of walkthrough. After playing it once I am wanting to go back and attempt to complete it in 2 hours now I know where all the items and secrets are.
It is kind of difficult the first time around because you are looking everywhere for items and you don’t know what goes where but it should be a little easier the second time around. The graphics are perfect for the game and that’s a good thing when it comes to looking for little items such as a screw. Storyline wise this is one of the best stories in a game. I don’t think I would change much, if anything about this story at all. The secrets are perfect and the twists are amazing. Definitely worth the price tag of £15.99
