News Leak: Champions League Coming To FIFA 19
It appears EA Sports have got the official licence for the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League – according to an accidental leak from an unexpected source.
The news doesn’t come as a massive surprise for those keeping up with events as last month, Konami its 10-year deal with UEFA would come to an end after this year’s Champions League final meaning Pro Evolution Soccer’s long run as the exclusive Champions League rights holder for video games is over.
The announcement led to speculation that EA Sports had nabbed the Champions League licence for FIFA 19, which is due out later this year. Well, according to a Dutch commentator, EA Sports has done exactly that.
While being interviewed recently on Dutch television, Fox Sports commentator Evert ten Napel was telling all about his voice work on the FIFA series, and during the course of the interview said how excited he was about the addition of the Champions League and the Europa League for FIFA 19.
“For about six or seven days a year, I record updated lines [for the game] in the studio in Utrecht with Youri Mulder [his Dutch co-commentator on the game]. In 2019 as well, the game will get even better, because they’ve added the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. I’m almost finished with the 2019 version, which will then go to the test center. [In the test center] some very good players will check everything and after that, it will go to the stores in October. And then all those weirdos will be standing in line again at midnight.”
The interviewers or program makers didn’t appear to realise the significance of what Evert had just said, and the interview carried on as normal. EA are set to unveil FIFA 19 at this years E3 and no doubt, although not a great surprise, they were likely to have made the inclusion of Champions League and Europa League competitions a big selling point. This leak may have taken the wind out of their sales slightly!
