The One We Found Xbox One Review
AN INSANE ASYLUM IN RUSSIA…WHAT CAN GO WRONG?
Published and developed by Loveridge Designs, comes The One We Found: a horror puzzle game with an unfortunate amount of cliches and overused techniques. You are James Ledgewick, a psychotherapist (who must be pretty crazy to be tropsing around an asylum at night) and your only task seems to just investigate and explore the dark secrets of the asylum.
That’s one of the problems with The One We Found, there’s no clear explanation to why and what you’re doing. The issue is, when you do try to find out why and what you’re doing, you lose interest quite quickly. But alas, let’s get into what this game does well.
You start off looking at the Asylum’s grand gates: a torch and some batteries are conveniently perched above a tree stump next to you. You enter the grounds and notice the front door is locked, hark, a puzzle!
Creepishly tiptoeing around the side of the building, waiting for any or all movement, you complete a series of tasks that will lead you into acquiring the key.
You enter the mansion and the journey to see how far the rabbit hole goes, begins…
Before this however, you will immediately notice Found’s graphics. It’s clear that any attempt of realism has been thrown out of the window. The graphics mimic those of earlier games such as Slender or the devilishly spooky SCP Containment Breach, but they’ve been out for years now. It just feels sloppy. Textures aren’t great, and the level design is very stretched out.
The two redeeming features about Found’s graphics are the performance and the lighting. The lighting is spot on, and makes you really feel a little spooked upon entrance to the Asylum.
The controls are all over the place as well. Left D-Pad is crouch, you have to hold RS to run and RB is the button to fire your weapon. These are just some of the control issues, to which you can’t adjust any of them. It just feels like a mess.
When you finally enter the Asylum, you will have then completed the Prologue. Which, to be honest threw me off a little bit as there’s no exposition at all. The Prologue is supposed to set the tone of the world our character is in and to explain why our “hero” is doing what they are doing.
Unfortunately, it only gets it half right.
I kept thinking to myself how ridiculously stupid this guy is or how much confidence he has, going into a place like this on his own. And then I thought, maybe I’m reading into this too deep and decided to leave it at that.
When you enter the Asylum, a whole new level of creepy hits you. If you missed the flashlight outside, there’s a spare in the cabinet next to you and so your journey begins.
Found doesn’t do a great job at explaining things, as previously stated, for example: when you first enter the Asylum, you can activate the phonogram toward the right of the room to get a 50G achievement called “Mortimer” with the description “He didn’t deserve it”. Whether this is a reference or an in joke within the game, was beyond me, but I was very much confused.
After doing some exploring, you will soon find your first enemy. The basement holds a spooky entity, one that caught me off guard.
As I went deeper into the basement, I saw a red glow and heard a noise, to which I assumed was the phonograph I activated upstairs. I was very wrong and had the poop scared out of me.
It was at that point I knew to turn the lights on, and invite some friends to chat over Xbox Live..I shamefully admit, I couldn’t play it alone.
I felt, at least, the game got the horror aspect kind of right. I was spooked at the start and it did give me quite the jump, but as I went further and further into the game, the little things just started piling up.
The puzzles are little tricky, most of them are relatively easy, with only a few I had to look up. They’re mostly made up of “find this item and put this item here” and keypad puzzles.
You also get your fair share of creatures, most of which being the dull-ishly slow zombie patients.
When you find your gun, you really want to make sure you get quite close to your target. The hitboxes are on another planet, what may seem to be a headshot can leave you clueless as to why it didn’t die. Gunplay isn’t amazing here, and when you’re out of bullets, there’s no ability to pistol whip your enemies.
That said, there is a surprising range of guns in this game. I…Found…this out (shh, it’s been a long day) by exploring the the survival game mode.
This actually isn’t half bad, but it’s a clear rip off of COD’s Zombie mode, and it’s painfully obvious. There are guns on the wall, costing points and doors you need to buy open, all that malarkey.
But it let me see what Found has to offer, in terms of guns. I could only really find assault rifles, a pistol and a revolver. The assault rifle I picked up, which looked something like an AK12 was terribly inaccurate. One tap of the bumper shot 4 bullets at once which, in a mode that requires you to be conservative with your ammo, annoyed me.
There was some special lazer looking gun on the wall, but I didn’t get enough points to earn it and by Wave 5, an enemy of immense power spawned on top of me and killed me instantly.
There are 3 maps to this game mode, but they’re all pretty bland and mimic what COD has already done before.
On top of this, there’s no multiplayer…not even couch co-op. So you’re on your own surviving the hordes of zombies, without all the fun and shenanigans of your friends playing with you. I feel like The One We Found has been done already, in other games and it’s a shame to say that really. I feel like it’s stuck in the past, and perhaps if it was released a few years earlier, it would have done quite well.
Overall, The One We Found is on the whole, a poor experience. Yes there will be moments where you’ll jump at something and maybe once or twice, you’ll feel genuine fear. But there’s nothing that stands out about this game, compared to all the rest of the horror games. It’s Survival Mode is pretty fun, but it’s ripped straight out of Call of Duty. The story mode is very plain and yes maybe you don’t need a story for a horror game. But with the gameplay lacking, a good story would lift a game like this up, but tragically…it doesn’t. The controls are all off and the graphics are dated. It’s sad to say, but I think The One We Found is very much lost.
