Vaporum Xbox One Review
IS THIS THE RETURN OF CLASSICAL GAMING?
Yes from developers Fatbot Games and publishers Merge Games comes the beautiful new RPG strategy game, Vaporum. The game is a grid, in the style of classic RPGs and your actions in this grid can mean the difference between life and death. Will you solve the almighty question and find out who you are and why you are here? If you step into this steampunk filled fantasy world, all your questions may soon be answered…
Vaporum is unlike any game I have played before. It mixes the classical RPG gameplay in games created well before my time and places them in a new, graphically stunning three dimensional world.
The graphics and art design of Vaporum is a testament of our time. It looks very reminiscent of Bioshock and the art deco style doorways and pipes here and there, are beautiful to look at. I remember just looking at various pieces of machinery thinking “…wow”. The graphics are stunning…in the most depressing way. The world you play in is very gritty and quite dystopian, but that’s what’s so good about it! I couldn’t keep myself away.
Now, the gameplay in Vaporum is mixed, in my opinion. The classic, yet quite clunky movement system really lets you know you are playing on a grid. The movement style makes you essentially move one square at a time and you feel every square. When you turn around, you also turn very clunkily, almost like some robot reacting to something.
This gameplay means that combat is a dot to dot battle of jumping on squares where your enemy can’t hit you to then quickly dashing in when they’ve used an attack to quickly hit them. It really does start to feel like an old 90s videogame, both in a good way and in a bad.
The levels are intriguingly designed and there are some puzzles for you to solve in this. The puzzles aren’t too hard to figure out and after you’ve started getting a jist of the game, you naturally start to become intriguing. Look in places where you wouldn’t think too, or search some containers, it’s all a case of investigating your surroundings.
Overall, Vaporum is a wonderful homage to an age when games weren’t all Fortnite and memes. The intriguing level design and absolutely stunning graphics, all lend themselves well to a world full of suspense and mystery. The controls, I would say, are clunky and they do feel very stiff a lot of time. I’ve walked onto some tiles that have resulted in my death and using a controller to play this game may feel weird. Next time I play this game, I would definitely try it using a keyboard and mouse as I feel the movement mechanics work a lot better than they do using a controller. The game is certainly fun though and I would recommend to anyone who’s up for trying an old styled game, in a new format. And for those of you who grew up during retro video games, this too, is a must.
